A lot has happened since my last post - we finished (almost) the house, moved in, sold our old house, and by far the biggest change - we became parents to the most beautiful baby in the world (I'm not prejudiced at all!)
First things first! My J entered this world on January 6th. It was the coldest day we have seen for 20 years at a -36 windchill (although if we're being honest, I really had no idea how cold it was and I really didn't care at the time). She was 7 pounds, 15 ounces and 20 inches long. And born with a set of lungs! I don't know where she got that from - A and I are both typically quiet...I think, anyway. She has her daddy's forehead and her mommy's blue eyes. And she likes to eat! A lot! She has been consistently eating about double the typical amounts for her age according to our pediatrician.
I love her beyond everything - I didn't know such a love was possible, though I'd heard it was. And this is my last week of maternity leave. I'm so incredibly blessed to have had this time with her and I will have a hard time come Monday morning I know! Twelve weeks sounds like a long time...but it is so, so short.
As far as house stuff - the new one is finished besides a few bits of trim here and there. And I love being here! It's so nice and quiet (on the few warm days J and I have been able to get outside). It's still quite a mess inside despite the fact that we moved in over a month ago...we have gotten a large bit of STUFF (that we had decluttered from the old house for selling) out of my parents' basement so it looks like we moved in all over again. Thank goodness for rummage sales! I'm doing my best to downsize and contribute a lot to the sale we will have when the town rummage sales are going on. And I'm doing my best to get the majority of it done before I go back to work! I'm making progress but there's a bit to go.
Our old house sold at the absolute most perfect time it could. God had a plan for us all along, though I worried a bit along the way! We sold the house within weeks of being able to move into the new house, so we didn't have to bother with moving into temporary housing in between the two. Which would have added to our stress exponentially! (Just for the record, building a house and having a baby at the same time can be done...obviously. But it's definitely not something I'd recommend everyone do! It's QUITE stressful.) And the person who bought our house seemed like she really liked it, so I feel better knowing my first house will be taken care of. It was a good house for us to start our life together in and has a lot of very good memories associated with it.
Now I'd best go unpack and sort a few more boxes while J is happy in her bouncer!

News, news, news!
This weekend was, I believe, one of the most hectic holiday weekends I have ever had.
Not necessarily because of the number of things to do, but because of the
mental exhaustion caused by the few things we did do!
First of all, let me begin by letting you in on a secret. A
and I are embarking on the huge undertaking of building a house…and the even
bigger undertaking of becoming parents. We are beyond thrilled – but I think
some may question our sanity a little for doing this all at once! We are happy,
though.
Now, on to the house itself. This weekend was chock-full of
progress! Though not of the visible kind. We found out the trusses are
scheduled to arrive tomorrow – which means we should be getting a roof soon!
Thank goodness. Looks like we need to get a move on in the shingle choosing
department.
We did choose our siding finally. Really, it wasn’t much of
a choice. We had been waffling over one color for a couple weeks and we just
got over our commitment issues and picked it already. It’s a lovely darker
brown called Hearthstone. On sale at Menards! It will look something like this:
We also ordered our exterior doors from Menards – and saved
around $1100 by buying them there instead of at the local place. Unfortunately,
I cannot afford to be strictly loyal to our local businesses… The doors are
going to be pretty though! I’m very excited for supplies to start rolling in!

Patience is STILL a virtue, right?
Argh! At this rate, it sure feels like we won’t ever get to
start on our house! It is gorgeous outside today, but Wednesday through Saturday
at least promises more rain. So that means we most likely won’t be able to
start the basement, because it will be more like digging a pond than a
basement, and we already have a pond. So I must keep my patience in good
working order, I guess.
This past Saturday we went to the auction A’s grandparents
were having since they moved off their farm into town, and it went as well as
could be expected. A didn’t buy anything and he was a little disappointed about
that, but he FINALLY was able to sell his Mustang, which he has been trying to
sell off and on for the past few years. (And bonus, with the money from the
car, we will be able to pay off our truck! Which is a fantastic feeling.)
I ended up with an older rocking chair and a super rickety
little table that in its current condition probably isn’t worth the $2 we paid
for it. But I have big plans for it (thank you, HGTV!) to be taken apart and
put back together sturdily, then painting it turquoise to match my new front
door (when I manage to GET a new front door) and putting plants on it. It will
be fantastic. My rocking chair will be getting a new cushion and new fabric on the
back and seat and it will be a lovely addition to the new house as well I
believe.
Apparently, I’m not the most observant individual, though (I
know, shocker, right?), and this was brought home to me once again this
weekend. My mom and I perused the items left to be auctioned on Saturday just
to have something to do, and there were quite a few old kitchen cabinets and a
counter and sink that had been pulled from the basement. I remember distinctly
thinking as we walked by that they looked just like the cabinets we took out of
our house when we redid the kitchen.
Well…they looked like those cabinets…because they WERE those
cabinets. A and I had a pretty good laugh over that one – I had no idea that
was where the cabinets had ended up. I felt a little silly not recognizing them,
as they were the bane of my existence for a while.

...so...
I guess we've all figured out by now that I am an inconsistent blogger. That is mainly because I no longer have access to the Internet at work for things like that, and by the time I get home I have no desire to spend MORE time on the computer since I have been on it all day.
But every once in awhile I get the urge to write again.
Like today.
The snow is falling in huge fat flakes, and I can only be grateful that today was a work holiday and I got to stay home. Snow is so much more fun at home, don't you think?
A and I spent a fun forty minutes running around with Yoshi in the snow...I think he should have been an Alaska dog or something. He definitely loves the snow and all the mess he can make with it. All in all, we have had a lovely snow day so far.
We went to the local "Touch of Dutch" store in town and bought some delicious cheese (we made nachos) and some whole wheat flour and local honey. Recently, we also got one of their produce boxes. Which are fabulous. It is making it so much easier to include vegetables in our meals because we don't want to waste the beautiful box ingredients! Now, if only I knew what to do with cauliflower...
A and I have also been having fun lately looking through a little book of house plans. Not that we have any intention of building or moving soon - it's just fun to dream. And argue over those dreams a little! Pinterest doesn't help with that either...I keep seeing all these beautiful, bright spacious dream rooms on there and I can't help but search them out. *sigh*

The Big Debate
So. The other evening the subject was broached. No conclusions were reached. Research must be completed and data compiled to determine the best option.
What am I talking about?
Why, where to go on vacation, of course!
Let's give some background information first. We usually go somewhere for our anniversary (Look at me, saying "usually"! We've only had one anniversary so far!) and we usually use the ride money from the entire year to go. (We set that money aside every week and pretend we don't have it - it's there if we need it, but otherwise it's the vacation fund.) We have no idea how much ride money we have this year because we don't count it. Anyway.
A asked me the other night where we were going on vacation. As if I just know these things. He has nowhere specific in mind - just wants to know where we are going. So now it has started.
Where in the world...ahem. Sorry. Where in the continental United States are we going to go? I have absolutely no idea, except that Florida is out. That was our honeymoon. And Branson is out. We did that last year. So many places are left to choose from!

I said, Brr! It's cold in here!
Well, this week has been full of excitement. (If that’s what you want to call it.)
Monday evening I got home and noticed it was colder than usual—which let to some investigation. Our house was 63 degrees and the furnace wouldn’t light! Great. It’s been awhile since we’ve had any household disasters, so I guess we were due.
Anyway, we ended up calling a heater guy (not sure what that would be called specifically), and A was on the phone with him for about an hour walking through possible solutions. No luck. So we picked up a tiny heater from A’s parents and moved it from room to room to try and warm up the area we were in. Yesterday A’s mom was in Lowe’s and picked us up a more heavy duty portable heater so it was a little warmer last night. And we have 10 layers on the bed (I counted!), so we are doing ok. The worst part is waking up in the morning to a freezing cold house because we’re too nervous to leave the heaters on while we sleep.
The heater guy ordered a part from Kansas which should come in today and be installed later this evening, so hopefully we will be warm again soon!!
Side note: There is a nationwide contest to win $50,000 for your local hospital and Y107 is currently in third place! If you haven’t already, you should register every email address you have (totally legal and within contest rules) and vote 10 times each day until February 5th! The money will go to MU Children’s Hospital in Columbia. Go to https://radiocares.childrensmiraclenetwork.org/Login.aspx or www.y107.com to register and vote! Not much time left now, and I think it would be really amazing if we beat out the major markets that are ahead of us!
Side note: Currently reading Dan Brown’s “The Lost Symbol” and so far it is excellent! Very mysterious and suspenseful and a nice change from reading Jane Austen for so long.

Not too much happening on the home front.
A and I have been doing workout videos together (really, it’s me coercing him into doing them with me so that I will actually do them…but that’s really not important) a couple days a week for about…1 week. It gets PRETTY interesting, let me tell you. I am more familiar with the videos, so I have an idea of what’s coming and can do a little more of the moves just because I’ve had more practice (not to say I do them correctly, but I’m trying!). A, on the other hand, has never done anything like this before in his life and he is hopping around like crazy, only trying to follow the video about half the time. It’s pretty hilarious, and if nothing else, it makes working out much more entertaining!
I had my yearly checkup yesterday and the doctor told me I’m alive and ok, so that is good. I’m also down about 10 pounds from where I was at this time last year! Which is very encouraging.
We sent out pictures off to our photographer yesterday, too. (Finally!) She won’t be able to start our book for a week or two yet since she is currently already working on a couple other ones, but in the next few weeks we should be getting a sample to view online so we can get into the proofing and rearranging and all that wonderful stuff. I’m so excited to see it! It should be pretty amazing. And the best part is that we’ve already paid for it.
Last night we attempted yet another foray into making a recipe we’ve never tried before—sweet potato fries! I’ve had them before and quite enjoyed them so I figured we should try them since we are REALLY needing to go grocery shopping, and our options are very limited at this point, and A’s mom sent home some pretty big sweet potatoes last week when A was off work. Perfect time to use some of them up, right? Well, besides burning a few of them (and actually I kind of liked the burnt ones) they turned out really well. We didn’t have the seasoning we’re used to using on them, but we added some seasoned salt (mixture of salt, onion, paprika, garlic and a few other things) after dipping the strips in canola oil and baked them. They were very tasty! But it made me very VERY aware that we don’t have very sharp knives. That, or I’m just not strong enough to cut sweet potatoes. (A, of course, seemed to have no trouble cutting them into strips so I got the messy job of dipping them into canola oil. What a mess! Overall, though, we deemed them a success! We’ll probably try them again, but maybe use a different knife next time…

Productivity is at an all-time high!
At least at our house.
Let me just say now that this weekend was one of the most productive I’ve had in QUITE a while…
Friday of course, I got to stay home with A (New Year’s Day!) and we just went crazy cleaning and organizing and arranging. Our house looked much better afterwards (not so cluttered with stuff and more livable), but we had not accomplished a single thing off my list.
Did I mention I started out this weekend with a list? Well, I did. I was super excited to have 3 whole days with no major events or shopping or trips planned so I made a list of everything that I would like to get accomplished by today (Monday—end of weekend, *sigh*). It was pretty extensive. At least 9 things long. (Which really isn’t that much, I know. But they were all time-consuming projects!)
Yeah, and Friday we didn’t get a single item checked off the list. Which may have had a little something to do with us taking a pretty good-sized break after lunch to play some Super Mario Brothers on the Wii. Very entertaining, not very productive. But then A’s dad came over and they put down the wooden trim strip thingy between our kitchen and living room to make the divider between the laminate and linoleum look good. And it looks pretty darn awesome, let me tell you! (I’m really just excited that we don’t have raw-edged laminate in our house anymore. So that may be part of it.) Anywho.
I also finally (FINALLY!) downloaded all the pictures from A and my cameras. Which doesn’t sound that exciting. Until you figure in that these pictures included bridesmaids dress pictures, house shopping pictures (of the house we purchased of course), house fixing-up-in-progress pictures (ya know, paint and all that), Christmas pictures, and HONEYMOON pictures (800 and some honeymoon pictures, to be exact). It took me 2 HOURS to get all those onto the computer. And until I get them burned onto a CD and backed up, I’m still not deleting them from the cameras. So they may be on there for 6 months or so. But hopefully not. My goal is to pick out all our favorite pictures from the honeymoon and turn them into a hardcover photobook at www.kodakgallery.com (Mom found these online, and they look fabulous!). I’m excited to get started on that!
Saturday I went with Mom, H, and M prom dress and grocery shopping. It was very fun! Brought back lots of memories of when I shopped for prom dresses….
Yesterday, A and I whooped up on my list. We got at least 3 or 4 things knocked off it. Which is a lot when you consider that we cleaned off our office desk (not the office, just the DESK) and it took about 2 hours. Yeah, it was pretty packed with junk. But we had fun shredding the junk! And it looks fantastic now!
We printed some coupons offline, and organized our little coupon filer thingy, so we are prepared for grocery shopping next weekend. A first for us, that’s for sure! (I mean being prepared, not shopping. )
Now, the rest of my list will have to be accomplished in the evenings when I get home from work….but I think we can do it!

Woohoo! Woohoo!
I am so darn excited my toes are tingling! And it’s kind of silly really…
A has gone to pick up a mini deep freezer to put in our laundry room. Now, to most people this probably wouldn’t be quite as big a reason for celebration as it is at our house…
You see, I grew up in a household where monthly shopping trips were the rule—at least for as long as I can remember. After the payday at the end of the month, my mom and one of we three kids would head off on the “monthly shopping trip” where food enough was purchased to last throughout the whole month. So that’s how I learned to grocery shop—I stockpile, and buy a lot of something that is on sale, because hey, it can be frozen and used later.
Except as things stand now in A and I’s little house, it can’t. We only have a refrigerator freezer, which doesn’t very well lend itself to stockpiling. At all! And it has been a struggle for us to try and shop for just a couple of weeks at a time because we are both of the ‘stockpile’ mentality (his mom didn’t monthly shop, but they DEFINITELY bought a lot of stuff on sale and stockpiled!).
You may be wondering, “Well, why don’t those silly people just put in a deep freezer? Then their problems would be solved!”
And I would agree with that line of thinking except for the teensy little fact that we just don’t have the space for one. Even if we smushed everything together as much as possible, we just have no way of squeezing one in—most especially in our laundry room, which is the most logical place for a freezer. (We have about a 4 foot width to work with because the washer and dryer take up most of one wall.)
And Saturday when we went on our little grocery shopping trip to good ‘ol Walmart, we found it. IT. The perfect one! It is a cute little 7 cubic foot freezer! Just perfect for our little laundry room. But we wanted to make sure it would fit before we shelled out that kind of money (and because it wouldn’t have fit in the car anyway), so we wrote down the dimensions for measuring.
Today, A got off work early, so he is going to measure up the space and make sure it will fit and if it does (which I’m assuming it will because he hasn’t let me know otherwise and that was a couple hours ago) we will have a deep freezer! Our days of trying not to buy too much food will be over and we can buy more than 2 frozen pizzas and 1 loaf of bread at a time!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
This weekend I finally (FINALLY!) updated my driver’s license information. Yes, I know, 2 months plus after the wedding is probably a teensy bit late, but I had to take off work in order to be able to make it to the courthouse before they closed…and it’s a good thing I did! (As opposed to changing it over my lunch hour at an unfamiliar place.) It’s also a good thing I live less than 5 minutes away from it.
First I got there and forgot my marriage license. Which was kind of the whole point—to change my name. So I rushed home and got the license and came back. And found out that I had to have something with my new address on it to change my address. I searched frantically through my purse hoping I had SOMETHING in there…but my new purse just is too clean! There was nothing! So I went across the street to the post office (hoping some mail had come for me) only to find A’s bank statement…but nothing for me. Sigh. So I rushed home AGAIN and got MY bank statement and went back to the license office. To find a line of 4 people where there had been none. Double sigh. I finally got back to the counter, where the same woman I spoke to before did not remember me (are you kidding? This is the tiniest town ever!) at first. When we finally were getting down to the business of updating information, she had no clue and had to enter all my information 6 or 7 times before it would work! But at least I got to take a new picture, which turned out at least a little better than the previous one.
Christmas preparations abounded this weekend, too! Friday, before the license-changing debacle, I got all my shopping done for A. Woohoo! Saturday, after a marathon house-cleaning event, A and I took off for our yearly marathon shopping event. We got 95% of our Christmas shopping done, and all that remains is the wrapping! We also got a tree topper, tree skirt and two stockings. We have prospects of enjoying finding stocking stuffers, and A superglued the antlers on my reindeer (they were completely falling off and crooked). We hung the rest of our ornaments on our tree, so all that remains is the tinsel, and WE GOT OUR OUTSIDE LIGHTS UP! I’m super excited about that, because everyone else around us had theirs up and not having any of my own was making me sad. But now I can be happy and cheerful! And I’m sure A will appreciate that I’m not bugging him about them anymore.

Grr...that was just about all she could say.
Oh my, I was so mad last night! I got home after a fairly frustrating day completely and totally ready to eat some chili. It’s one of my absolute favorite comfort foods. And what do you know? The stupid beans were crunchy! Not done at all. Grr. So we are eating chili tonight instead.
Last night we had chicken patties that were only a little burnt and vegetables with Velveeta cheese….or should I say Velveeta soup with vegetables? We kind of went a little overboard on the cheese…but it was yummy! Not chili, but still ok…
And when I tried to print coupons from online, they wouldn’t print! I have no idea what went wrong. I will try again tonight. Grr.
I’m at least probably going to be off half the day tomorrow, which is always good. I have to update my driver’s license (yeah, still haven’t done that) and go shopping for A since its about the only time I’ll be able to go without him.
And to top it all off, I caught A’s cold so I can’t breathe well today. Grr Grr!
Sorry it’s such a downer today. Just too much being frustrated the last couple of days…maybe it will be better and I can get some laundry done tonight. And print my coupons.

New Redneck joke!
We were watching Blue Collar Comedy Tour on TV the other night (man, did I miss TV!) which is probably what prompted the following story.
Last night, A came home and told me he had come up with his own redneck joke, and it was a true story. After some fine tuning and giggling and laughing, we have a final result:
*Please think in Jeff Foxworthy’s voice now*
If you go to the car wash, and spend fifty cents to wash your boots off because you don’t have outside water at your house….you might be a redneck.

I am a scam-spotting fiend! Well, that may have been a bit of an exaggeration, but I still caught one!
I’m sorry. I know! I have been slacking a bit and skipping days on you. My blog has been stagnant. But now it’s not!
This weekend was pretty darn busy.
I avoided a scam over the telephone. “Capital One” called about new Federal legislation that they wanted to tell me about. Here’s how that conversation went:
Capital One imposter: Hi, this is so-and-so, and we just wanted to inform you about some new Federal legislation that may change the ownership of your account.
Me: Ok, so tell me.
COI: Let me just pull up your account…ending in ####. Is that correct?
Me: Actually, can that information be mailed to me? Is that possible?
COI: No, it’s actually not possible.
Me: Ok, I’d rather not know then. Thank you.

I also cleaned my house (A of course, was gone deer hunting). After he came home we hung my clothesline outside just in time for it to rain, I washed a whole slew of laundry, and we worked on our “green room” which is full of boxes and is temporarily out of operation. (That must change because sister M is staying with us Friday night! Our first houseguest, woohoo!) We made a ton of progress there. Then we went out to A’s parents’ house so he could go deer-hunting again and we could bring home his bookcase. Which I promptly filled to bursting. And I still have books without a shelf to call home! Crazy, I know. But I love it!
Yesterday after church we worked on the green room a little more, but then headed out to his parents’ house again to help them slice homemade Canadian bacon. Very tasty stuff, but pretty gross feeling before its cooked. I’m pretty proud that I only said “Ew” a couple times. But I stayed completely away from the slicing of the deer meat for jerky! (I really don’t feel that compelled to help with that. It’s icky to me and I don’t eat it.)
Then we cheered for the Amazing Race people and booed some, and then headed home to work on the green room again. That didn’t last long though because we were just plain tired. So we went to bed, and so ended another weekend at the newlyweds’ house!
Not so bad, was it?
Oh yeah, and I watched a show (pretty cheesy one for the History Channel, actually) called Ancients Behaving Badly on Attila the Hun. Apparently, on the scale of “Psychotic Killer vs. Killer with a Goal” he ranked at the very top of the Psychotic scale and killed and plundered for destruction’s sake. He also ranked lowest on the Creativity scale because he left nothing behind. Just a little random trivia for you there.
