So in favor of love and romance, (and you know we all like some of that! Even if it’s not Valentine’s Day…) today will be my top five favorite romantic couples. Literary and otherwise.
Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy: I just like these two. They’re not perfect, and they each know the other is not perfect (that’s rather a large part of the plot of Pride and Prejudice, you know). Somehow, though, they manage to get past all that and see that the differences and imperfections don’t really matter when you love someone. Misunderstandings abound in their courtship, which is not really a courtship as much as stumbling onto the fact that they are well-suited and just plain meant to be together. In fiction, destiny is a powerful thing. And when you reach the end of Pride and Prejudice, you just want to do a little dance (at least, I do) because they made it! And then we can all be happy.
Aidan Gallagher and Jude Murray: These two you probably haven’t heard of. They aren’t famous and definitely aren’t known well outside of any fans of…Nora Roberts. They are from one of my favorite novels (hey, some of these DO have plots, ok?), Jewels of the Sun. She leaves Chicago where she is miserable and finds herself in Ireland (where I would LOVE to visit) where she finds confidence and really comes into her own. And he is proud of her accomplishments and treasures her triumphs as much as she does. Or at least close to it. It just so nice to read their story (partly because they have to help break a 100 year old spell, which is always a good thing). And who doesn’t like imagining Irish accents? **sigh**
Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester: If ever a couple was to overcome hardship, it would be this one. A poor, desolate childhood for Jane, and a wife whose insanity is hidden from him until after the wedding for Mr. Rochester. When Jane finds out about this wife at the altar(to marry Mr. Rochester herself!), she immediately packs her bags and leaves, because she ain’t no slouch in the morals department and she just isn’t going to be a party to bigamy. But following the fire at Thornfield, and the death of Mr. Rochester’s first (and only) wife, along with his blindness from an accident as he was trying to save her (the wife, not Jane), Jane immediately returns to him and they live happily ever after! After all of that…they ended up happy together after all. That’s a nice example of “love conquers all”, don’t you think?
Noah and Allie: There was a movie going around for awhile that everyone seemed to have seen. At least if you were a gal you saw it. Ever heard of “The Notebook”? Classic love story. Boy meets girl and they fall in love. Obstacles arise that seem to kill any chance they’ll ever have of being together. Boy and girl overcome obstacles and live happily ever after. Does it get any better than that? I didn’t think so. There is just something about a love that lasts and lasts…even until both are old and gray. If only everyone had the luck to find that.
Maria and Captain Von Trap: Who can resist humor, love, and the ability to break into song at any given moment all rolled into a delightful story about two people falling in love, their family, and the measures they take to keep their family safe? Certainly not me! This is a feel good story all around and if you don’t know that by now, you should go watch the movie and then see. Classic.
